Leadership in advanced technology and research are keys

excellence. Throughout its history, Saint Joseph's has been a
pioneer in the Southeast as a provider of
innovative cardiovascular care, often the first provider in
the region to develop or offer new medical innovations. Saint
Joseph's list of "first" hospital
accomplishments includes:
- The first hospital in the southeast to perform open-heart
surgery.
- The first to develop a comprehensive catheterization
laboratory.
- The first to provide angioplasty as an alternative to coronary
bypass surgery; first to open a pacemaker clinic.
- The first hospital in Georgia to perform artificial heart
implants and most recently,
- The first to perform robotic-assisted, totally endoscopic,
closed chest surgery.
Advanced research
Advancements in the prevention and treatment of heart and vascular
diseases have been the direct result of research. Saint Joseph's
Hospital and its physicians and nurses are active in leading
pharmaceutical and device research studies to assist in the
advancement of cardiac and vascular care. Nursing research studies
are designed to improve care and education for patients and their
families.
Saint Joseph's Center for Heart and Vascular Care participates
in national and international research studies and clinical trials
related to cardiovascular surgery, cardiology, peripheral vascular,
neurovascular, pulmonary medicine and nursing.
